Photography backgrounds can take many forms. In a studio they can be as simple as a roll of thick paper that drops down behind the subject. But when you are outdoors, photography backgrounds can be altogether more challenging.

When you are taking photographs of a location, it’s worth considering how the background will influence the finished photo. Sometimes you can focus on an object in the foreground that will help to give the photograph more depth.

This gives the viewer an idea of how far away the background is. This is especially useful in landscape shots, where the background can be the horizon, or a set of distant cliffs, for example.

Different photography backgrounds for portraits can help to emphasis certain aspects of the person you are photographing or even provide a total contrast to them. Photography backgrounds can help to make the subject of your picture really stand out, as well as contributing to the depth and meaning of the photo itself.

Sometimes photography backgrounds can provide you with more than one set of photographs.

For example, you might take a selection of portrait shots against the background of a deserted warehouse. But the building itself may be full of detail and interest, so a further selection of shots could then be taken with the warehouse as the subject of the photo.

Buildings in the distance, the horizon, and a chain link fence some fifty yards away all of these things could then serve as photography backgrounds for the warehouse itself. It’s all a question of how you see things.

Photography backgrounds can be quite limiting if you only think of them as flat surfaces behind your subject. Angled and overlapping surfaces can provide your pictures with extra depth and interest, and with some creative thinking these can be achieved outdoors just as easily as they can in a photography studio.

The outdoors is full of naturally occurring props and photography backgrounds ready and waiting to be used by you. So let’s get our cameras ready and pick an interesting background for our photo.

For beginners, and for those who always seem to get blurred and out of focus shots every time they hit the shutter button, there are plenty of photography tips and tricks that will improve picture quality and get rid of blurred shots forever.

Plan Ahead to get good quality pictures.

It’s not necessary to put a huge amount of planning into every photo you take, especially if you are hoping for some spontaneity in the resulting shots. That said however, spending a couple of seconds steadying yourself and your camera is one of the best photography tips you could take heed of.

If you are using a tripod, blurring won’t be a problem. If not, find something to rest your elbows on if possible even if it means squatting down and shooting upwards. That alone may make for a more interesting photo.

If all else fails, tuck your elbows into your sides and hold the camera as steadily as you can. This prevents a lot of camera wobble and should result in better pictures.

What’s In A Picture?

Photography tips and advice from the pros can greatly improve many amateur pictures. Sometimes it’s easy to think about your subject and forget about paying attention to anything else that might be in the picture as well.

Make sure there is nothing in the frame that could ruin the picture. Stray camera straps, fingers and even long hair blowing in the wind have very often stolen what would otherwise have been a good photo.

Don’t forget you don’t have to get your subjects to pose for every photo. Shooting some pictures over the course of a few minutes while you are chatting with your subject often results in better and more natural photos than if your subject had posed for them.

Digital photography is very popular nowadays, and it is definitely more advantageous for the beginner, as it allows them the freedom to shoot as many pictures as they like without the worry of wasting lots of film.

Following some simple photography tips and tricks can be all it takes to change your pictures from average to very good. If you are serious about improving your photography, subscribe to a good photography magazine or a website’s newsletter. This will unearth plenty of photography tips to benefit from.
